How do you determine the best seasons by catchers in baseball history? You have to consider defense, power, batting average, speed, etc., etc. How do you give the proper weight to each aspect of every catcher’s season?
This is a good job for the Baseball-reference.com stat Wins Above Replacement, or WAR. It is a statistic that tries to objectively combine all of a player’s contributions into one number. That number is expressed as the number of wins the player would generate above that of a “replacement player,” i.e. the kind of player you could call up any time from Triple-A and plug in.
There are several different formulas for WAR, and there are other stats, like Win Shares, that attempt the same task. So this list should not be considered the final word on the subject. Think of it as one perspective on the ten best catcher seasons ever.
NOTE: To qualify for this list, a player had to spend at least 50% of his games at catcher in the season in question.
