Anthony DeSclafani back on track for Cincinnati Reds

Anthony DeSclafani was a workhorse for the Cincinnati Reds last year. He worked 184.2 innings as a 25-year-old rookie on his way to a 4.05 ERA in 31 starts.

Even more was expected from DeSclafani this year with a year under his belt. That didn’t happen. DeSclafani suffered an oblique strain late during spring training. He’s yet to pitch for the Reds this year.

But DeSclafani made significant progress Wednesday with a Triple-A rehab start. The right-hander threw just three innings and a total of 37 pitches. That limited amount of work was a start desperately needed by a Reds’ team that is spiraling out of control towards 100 losses.

DeSclafani gave up three earned runs on three hits in his rehab start. All the runs scored in his first inning of work on a three-run homer by former major leaguer Chris Parmelee.

After DeSclafani gave up the homer, he retired the next eight batters he faced.

At this low of a pitch-count rate, DeSclafani can be expected to make at least two more rehab starts and possibly a third before he finally gets to rejoin the Reds.

Once DeSclafani does rejoin the Reds, one of the current starters in the rotation will either convert to the bullpen or get optioned to the minors if eligible.

DeSclafani could be rejoining the team about the same time or shortly after another DL’d starter in Jon Moscot, who is scheduled to make perhaps his last rehab start tomorrow.

Moscot most likely will bump a current Reds’ starter from the rotation. DeSclafani most definitely will force a current starter out because he is guaranteed a spot based on his consistency last year.

The most likely current starters to see their time in the rotation end are Alfredo Simon and Daniel Wright. The rubber-armed Simon is more than capable of jumping into the Reds’ bullpen. Wright most likely will return to Tripe-A as a starter but could stick with the Reds as a reliever.
